Mei Misaki

from AnotherPopular character

Mei Misaki is the girl who does not exist — the student designated as "the one who isn't there" in Yomiyama North Middle School's cursed third-year class, wearing an eyepatch over a doll's prosthetic eye and carrying the knowledge of what the class's dead truly are.

Background

Mei grew up knowing her mother, a doll craftsman who died when she was young. She was held back a year due to illness and placed into class 3-3, where the standing countermeasure against the death curse — one student treated as officially nonexistent — was assigned to her. She accepted this with characteristic detachment and spent a year perfecting invisibility as a social mode. When Kouichi Sakakibara transfers in and inexplicably sees and speaks to her, the countermeasure begins to unravel. Mei knows more about the curse than she initially reveals, including its mechanism and its solution.

Skills

SkillWhat it does
Death-Sight (Doll's Eye)Her prosthetic left eye, replaced with a doll's eye by her mother's workshop, can see the "colour of death" — a supernatural perception that identifies who in the class is the extra dead person walking among the living
Situational AnalysisShe observes and processes calmly even under extreme stress; her composure under pressure is the class's most reliable asset when the curse accelerates
Information WithholdingShe understands timing — releasing what she knows too early would not help and might make things worse; she holds critical information until the moment it can actually be used

Personality

Quiet, composed, and completely uninterested in performing normalcy. Mei speaks when she has something to say and doesn't when she doesn't. The year spent as a social nonentity has removed most of her attachment to social expectation, which makes her the calmest person in the room in situations that are actively killing her classmates. Her relationship with Kouichi is the series' warmth — she does not trust easily, but when she does, it is total.

Relationships

  • Kouichi Sakakibara — the transfer student who saw her when everyone else was instructed not to; their friendship is the emotional centre of the series and the thing that makes the curse's resolution meaningful

Role in the Story

Mei is Another's structural anchor — the person who knows what the horror is before the audience does, and whose restraint in revealing it is a source of sustained tension rather than frustration. Her doll's eye is the series' thesis made literal: some things can only be seen by someone who is already partly outside the world of the living.
