Krista Lenz is the name she chose and the person she performed — behind it is Historia Reiss, illegitimate daughter of the last king, raised to believe her existence was a mistake and trained by that belief into a habit of self-erasure.

Background

Historia was born to Rod Reiss and a servant woman; her mother was killed in front of her and she was placed in a village with a false name and explicit instructions never to be acknowledged. She enlisted in the military as Krista Lenz and cultivated a reputation for sweetness and self-sacrifice — a persona that Ymir identified, almost immediately, as performance. After the fall of Wall Rose and the capture arc, Historia's royal lineage became politically significant, culminating in her coronation as queen. Her arc is about closing the distance between the name she was given and the person she actually is.

• Ymir — the only person who saw through the Krista performance immediately and told her so; their bond is the most significant relationship in Historia's arc

Role in the Story

Historia is Attack on Titan's study in political legitimacy — a person manufactured as an absence who is then forced by circumstance to become the exact thing the system tried to ensure she could never be. Her coronation is the series' most pointed irony: the hidden heir becomes queen, and immediately begins trying to use that power for something the system would not have approved of.
