Maomao

Maomao is the deadpan teenage apothecary at the centre of The Apothecary Diaries, raised in the pleasure district and sold into the emperor's rear palace as a servant. Background

Maomao grew up in the entertainment district on the edge of the capital, in and around the brothel where the courtesans looked after her, and learned pharmacology from Luomen, the gentle former court physician she calls her father. Her childhood was spent grinding roots, treating sick working women and reading medical texts, and her idea of a good day was getting hold of a toxin she had not yet tested. That life ended when kidnappers snatched her while she was out gathering herbs and sold her into the rear palace as a low-ranking maid. Her plan was simple: keep her head down, do the laundry, serve out her term and go home. Then she noticed that the emperor's infant children kept falling ill, worked out why, and could not stop herself from leaving an anonymous warning. The note got her noticed, and the quiet plan collapsed.

Maomao is outwardly the perfect blank-faced servant and privately merciless. She bows correctly while thinking something withering, keeps her freckles painted on so nobody looks twice at her, and negotiates hard whenever money or rare ingredients are involved. She is famously unmoved by Jinshi, whose beauty reduces everyone else in the palace to stammering. Offer her a new poison, though, and the mask drops completely into open, slightly alarming glee.
