Miya Chinen

Miya Chinen is fourteen, an internationally ranked competitive skater, and the most technically precise rider in the underground midnight race known as "S" — a prodigy who burned out on people and retreated into skating as the one domain where other humans are simply obstacles to be beaten.

Background

Miya started competitive figure skating as a child and reached international competition standards before high school. The competitive environment taught him to be precise and to be contemptuous of everything beneath that precision — particularly the emotions and social expectations that he found counterproductive to performance. He came to "S" for its skating, not its community. His disdain for adults is consistent and specific: he finds them unreliable, hypocritical, or both. His character arc begins from the position of someone who has already decided that the warmth people claim to find in skating is a story people tell themselves, and runs toward having that assumption disproved by the specific individuals he cannot dismiss.

What changes across the series is not that he stops noticing this but that specific people earn exceptions, and his relationship with those exceptions reveals the thing he has been protecting. Reki and Langa's impact on him is the series' clearest illustration that love for something, when encountered authentically, is difficult to dismiss.

Miya is SK8 the Infinity's argument about competitive excellence and what it costs: that becoming very good by treating skating as pure technical performance is achievable, and that there is something it still fails to give you. His arc is about what Reki's uncomplicated joy exposes in someone who has been substituting precision for passion for long enough that he forgot there was a difference.
