Renzou Shima

from Blue Exorcist: Kyoto SagaPopular character

Renzou Shima is the most socially comfortable person in the True Cross Academy cram school class and the first of his peers to genuinely befriend Rin Okumura after the blue flame revelation — a fact that reveals more about him than his usual presentation of casual disinterest suggests.

Background

He grew up in Kyoto as the fifth and youngest son of the Shima family, a household with deep exorcist roots and a reputation shaped partly by his older brothers. Growing up with Ryuuji Suguro and Konekomaru Miwa from childhood, he arrived at the cram school with a pre-existing inner circle that the rest of the class was joining around. He's pursuing an Aria Meister certification, which suits his tendency to work through indirection rather than direct confrontation — the discipline rewards the ability to recall and deploy holy texts in the right sequence, which benefits from a more flexible mental approach than brute memorization. He has a genuine fear of insects, which the series deploys for comedy against his otherwise unshakeable social ease, and an openly acknowledged obsession with women, which his older brother Juuzou described as making him the most obvious pervert among the Shima brothers — a title Renzou accepts without much distress.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Aria (Meister track)The exorcism discipline using holy scripture recitation; Renzou's social intelligence and ability to remain calm under social pressure translate into a capacity to maintain the focus required for Aria work in difficult conditions
K'rik CombatHe wields an Aria staff, bringing real physical capability to situations where scripture alone isn't sufficient; his fighting ability is more serious than his casual demeanor suggests, consistent with his family background
Social AdaptabilityHis ability to read rooms and adjust his behavior accordingly gives him a tactical flexibility in interpersonal situations that has practical value in exorcist work, which often requires building trust quickly with people who are scared or hostile

Personality

He is genuinely at ease in a way that some people mistake for not caring. The series eventually makes clear that the distinction matters — his decision to befriend Rin when the rest of the class was recalibrating to fear reveals that his openness isn't merely social performance but reflects something consistent in how he actually evaluates people. He doesn't carry grudges in the way Ryuuji does, which makes him better at updating his assessment when someone gives him reason to.

Relationships

  • Ryuuji Suguro — his childhood friend from Kyoto, whose intensity and determination Renzou has known long enough to understand without needing to match it
  • Konekomaru Miwa — the third of the Kyoto trio, whose careful approach to everything is a different kind of contrast to Renzou's casual ease
  • Yukio Okumura — the cram school teacher whose relationship with Rin creates a different kind of context for how Renzou processes the demonic heritage situation

Role in the Story

Renzou is Blue Exorcist's demonstration of what genuine openness looks like in a story that's largely about the difficulty of extending it across the line between human and demon. His friendliness is real, which the series validates by making it matter — the friendship he extends to Rin when no one else does is not incidental. There's also more to him than the easygoing surface, and the series gradually reveals the depth that the casual persona was sitting above.
