Ryuuji Suguro

Ryuuji Suguro, known to his peers as "Bon," carries the weight of a destroyed temple, a family's ruined reputation, and a personal vow to defeat Satan — which makes Rin Okumura's existence a more complicated problem than almost anyone else's in the cram school class.

Background

He was born into the Myoudha-ji Temple family, a Buddhist exorcist lineage based in Kyoto, whose head priest is his father. Sixteen years before the series begins, Satan attacked the temple directly, leaving the family's reputation damaged and the community around it shaken. Ryuuji grew up defined by this event — not simply as a victim of it but as someone who decided, early and completely, that he would become strong enough to prevent it from mattering again. He enrolled in the True Cross Academy Exorcist Cram School as the top student in his class, pursuing dual Meister certifications in both Aria (holy scripture recitation to neutralize demons) and Dragoon (heavy artillery combat), an academically demanding combination that most students don't attempt. He grew up in Kyoto alongside Renzou Shima and Konekomaru Miwa, which means his inner circle carries its own history and its own complicated dynamics before the cram school even begins.

Role in the Story

Ryuuji is Blue Exorcist's most direct articulation of the cost of a clear purpose — he knows exactly what he wants and why, which gives him more discipline than anyone around him and less room to be uncertain about who he is. The series tests this identity primarily through Rin, whose existence forces Ryuuji to decide whether his hatred of Satan and his relationship to the people around him are compatible or whether he has to choose.
