Riza Hawkeye
from Fullmetal AlchemistFan favourite
Riza Hawkeye is Roy Mustang's most trusted aide, a sharpshooter who holds herself to a standard as exacting as her aim — and who carries on her back, literally, the most dangerous knowledge the series contains.
Background
Hawkeye's father was a flame alchemy researcher who passed the core of his research to his daughter before he died — encoded as a tattoo across her back. She later permitted Mustang to read and memorise it, then had most of it burned away to prevent anyone else from using it. She joined the military, served in the Ishvalan War alongside Mustang, and has remained his adjutant ever since. Her stated purpose is to keep Mustang moving toward a goal that justifies the things they both did in Ishval.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Marksmanship | Operates multiple handguns simultaneously with exceptional precision; routinely neutralises targets at ranges and angles that most trained soldiers cannot match |
| Tactical Assessment | Reads battlefield conditions rapidly and provides Mustang with the information he needs to make decisions; effectively functions as a second operational brain |
| Cool Under Pressure | Maintains composure in situations that would destabilise less experienced soldiers; her calm is not affectlessness — it is discipline |
Personality
Controlled, perceptive, and quietly protective. Hawkeye does not express emotion in ways that are easy to read, but the people around her learn over time where the feeling is located. She chose to stay beside Mustang not because she was ordered to but because she decided he was worth keeping alive and on course — a decision she revisits constantly and arrives at the same conclusion every time.
Relationships
- Roy Mustang — her commanding officer and the person she has structured her purpose around protecting; their dynamic is professional on the surface and something considerably more complicated underneath
- Edward Elric — a subordinate she respects and occasionally deploys as a correction against Mustang's behaviour
Role in the Story
Hawkeye functions as Fullmetal Alchemist's conscience in uniform — she is the person who will tell Mustang, quietly and without hesitation, when he is about to make a mistake, and the person whose potential loss is the most effective threat anyone can make against him.
