Ruijerd Superdia
from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless ReincarnationPopular character
Ruijerd Superdia is the most feared warrior the Superd race has ever produced — and also the man spending his remaining years trying to undo the reputation that fear built for his people through no fault of their own.
Background
The Superd are a warrior race distinguished by red hair and a spear-shaped mark on their foreheads that serves as a third eye of sorts. They were once one of the great demon clans, feared for their combat ability but not uniquely reviled. Then the Demon God Laplace used them as weapons — removing their free will during the Laplace War and directing them to slaughter children — and when the war ended, he manipulated history so that the world remembered the Superd as willing murderers of innocents rather than as Laplace's coerced instruments. The result is that Ruijerd, who was a victim of the same possession that turned his people into killers, now moves through a world where his appearance causes immediate terror and where "Dead End" — the name given to the Superd as monsters — follows him everywhere. He has spent years trying to correct this by protecting children wherever he finds them, because children are specifically what his people killed during the war and because he cannot undo what happened but can choose what he does with what remains. He encounters Rudeus and Eris in the Demon Continent and agrees to escort them to their destination, viewing it as an opportunity to continue his mission while allowing two stranded children to get home safely.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Spear Mastery | Ruijerd is one of the most skilled spear users alive — his technique is refined across centuries of combat experience and represents the Superd warrior tradition at its highest level |
| Physical Excellence | As a Superd, his physical attributes are exceptional even by demon race standards; the combination of strength, speed, and endurance that makes the Superd feared is present in him at a level that exceeds most of his contemporaries |
| Third Eye | The spear-shaped mark on his forehead functions as a perceptual organ — the exact capabilities vary in description but it allows him awareness of his surroundings beyond what normal sight provides, which is one of the reasons Superd warriors are so difficult to deceive in combat |
Personality
He is absolutely honorable in the specific, principled sense: he does not break promises, he does not abandon children, and he does not use cruelty where directness will serve. He is also entirely without softness about it — his code is not flexible, his expectations are consistent, and he holds Rudeus and Eris to standards that might seem harsh from someone else but come from a place of genuine respect for what they could become. The weight he carries — guilt for what his people did, determination to make something of the aftermath — is present but not performed.
Relationships
- Rudeus Greyrat — the child he agrees to escort and eventually comes to respect as something more than a charge; Rudeus's genuine effort to help clear the Superd's name is the basis of a trust that develops into one of the series' more unusual friendships across the age gap and species divide
- Eris — the third member of their traveling party, whose aggressive personality and fighting spirit Ruijerd evaluates honestly and trains with the same seriousness he brings to everything else
Role in the Story
Ruijerd is Mushoku Tensei's argument that reputation and character are separable — that someone can be the most feared being in a region and also one of its most honorable actors, and that the gap between those two things is not the person's failure but history's. His arc is about whether someone who cannot undo a crime they were made to commit can still make it mean something different through what they do afterward.
