Takemichi Hanagaki

Takemichi Hanagaki is deliberately, explicitly not built like a protagonist — he's physically weak, loses fights constantly, and is frequently terrified — and Tokyo Revengers' central argument is that what he has instead is what actually changes things.

Background

Takemichi is twenty-six and working a dead-end job when he learns his middle school girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, has been killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang. He is pushed onto a train track and, upon impact, finds himself transported twelve years into his past — to his middle school self. He discovers that handshakes with Hinata's brother Naoto anchor his leaps and allow him to return to the present to check whether his changes held. Each return reveals both what he successfully altered and what still went wrong. Over multiple leaps the scope of what he is trying to fix expands to include the gang's formation, the decisions that corrupt it, and the specific figures whose trajectories he has to alter. His position in every timeline is the same: someone no one would expect to matter, who persists anyway.
