Toushirou Hitsugaya is the youngest captain in Soul Society's history — a prodigy who achieved a rank that most shinigami spend centuries working toward, commanding the most powerful ice-type Zanpakuto in the Gotei 13.
Background
Hitsugaya grew up in the Rukongai alongside Momo Hinamori, the childhood friendship that shapes his most personal motivations. He entered the Shinigami Academy and progressed through it at a pace that drew attention from senior officers, eventually achieving bankai — an accomplishment that typically takes decades of training — within a fraction of that time. He was appointed captain of Squad 10 and given command over Rangiku Matsumoto, his lieutenant, whose relationship with him is complicated by the significant reversal in their seniority. His arc becomes intensely personal during the Aizen arc because of Hinamori.

Personality
Serious, direct, and easily irritated by people who comment on his age or height — which, given how frequently both come up, means he is easily irritated with some regularity. He holds himself to a captain's standard without visible effort and holds others to the standards appropriate to their positions. His care for Hinamori and Matsumoto is genuine and not performed, and the Aizen arc demonstrates exactly what it costs him to care about people in a conflict where people he cares about are used against him.
Relationships
- Ichigo Kurosaki — initially an obstacle, eventually an ally; Hitsugaya's relationship with Ichigo follows the standard trajectory of every Soul Society captain who underestimates him first

Role in the Story
Hitsugaya is Bleach's demonstration that prodigy comes with a specific kind of weight — the expectation of someone twice your age in a body that is not, and the particular vulnerability of being invested in people when you are good enough to notice exactly what is being done to them. His arc in the Aizen storyline is the series' most direct study in the cost of caring.
