Re:Zero Explained: The Story So Far and What's Next

Re:Zero Season 4 is no longer a teaser and a promise. It aired across 2026, wrapped up on 30 September, and finally took the anime into the Pleiades Watchtower, the stretch of Tappei Nagatsuki's light novels readers had talked up for years. Below: what the season adapted, how its two halves split Arc 6, why Rem slept so long and what is actually known about a Season 5, with a spoiler warning above every section that needs one.

Is Re:Zero Season 4 confirmed, and is it finished?

Confirmed, broadcast and complete. The announcement landed on 26 March 2025, minutes after the Season 3 finale, and the production kept the team that rebuilt the show for Priestella: White Fox animating, Masahiro Shinohara directing for a second season running, and Haruka Sagawa on character designs. Episode 1 even had its world premiere at Italy's Lucca Comics & Games on 1 November 2025, five months before the Japanese broadcast, with Emilia's voice actor Rie Takahashi there as guest.

The Re:Zero Season 4 release date came in two halves. The first cour, billed as the Loss Arc, ran for 11 episodes from 8 April to 17 June 2026. Re:Zero Season 4 part 2, the Recapture Arc, picked up on 12 August and ran for 8 more, ending on 30 September with an extended finale of roughly 45 minutes. That brings the TV anime to 85 episodes, and the season landed in the show's tenth-anniversary year, marked with a dedicated website and the anime's first-ever exhibition in Tokyo. Binged today, the Recapture Arc plays as one long climax.

How does Return by Death work?

Natsuki Subaru's only gift from being summoned is Return by Death. When he dies, time rewinds to a save point he can neither see nor choose, and he keeps every memory of the failed attempt while everyone else resets. Three rules turn it from a cheat into a curse. He cannot tell anyone: trying summons the Witch of Envy's shadowy hand, which usually crushes his own heart and, in one notorious Arc 3 loop, stopped the heart of the person he was confiding in instead. The checkpoint moves on its own, sometimes after he has already boxed himself in. And every death is felt in full, so the trauma accumulates rather than resetting.

Season 4 attacks the premise from a new direction. The power only works because Subaru carries his memories forward, so Arc 6 asks what happens when the memories he built in this world are taken while the loops continue. The answer is a hero rewinding with the instincts of the shut-in from episode 1, surrounded by allies who expect the man who held Priestella together.

Why is Rem asleep?

Spoiler warning: this section reaches the opening of Season 2 and the broad shape of Season 3.

In the first episode of Season 2 (episode 26 overall), the Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Gluttony ambushed Rem and Crusch on the road. Gluttony's authority eats names and memories. Crusch lost her own memories but kept her place in the world; Rem lost both her name and her memories, and losing the name wiped her from everyone else's minds. Her body sleeps on, her twin Ram has no idea she ever had a sister, and Subaru is the only person who still remembers her.

Season 3 made it stranger by revealing that Gluttony is not one person: Priestella puts Lye Batenkaitos and a second Archbishop of Gluttony, Roy Alphard, on the board at once, so there is more than one mouth to hunt down. That is the engine of Season 4: the Sage Shaula, who keeps the Pleiades Watchtower beyond the Auguria Dunes, is said to hold knowledge that could undo what Gluttony has eaten.

Where Season 3 left the story

Spoiler warning: this section covers how Season 3 ends.

Priestella survives four Sin Archbishops attacking at once, but not cleanly. Emilia stops being the person Subaru protects: as early as episode 52 she and Beatrice square up to Sirius, the Archbishop of Wrath. Reinhard gets his long-awaited bout with Regulus, the Archbishop of Greed, and Julius and Ricardo take on Roy Alphard. The bill arrives through the weapon that took Rem: Gluttony leaves fresh victims that no healer in the kingdom can restore, and Emilia's camp ends the season pointed at the one place rumoured to hold an answer.

What arc does Re:Zero Season 4 cover?

Spoiler warning: the two subsections below describe Season 4's plot, episode by episode in places. Jump to "Is there a Re:Zero Season 5?" if you have not finished it.

Part 1, the Loss Arc (episodes 67-77)

Re:Zero Arc 6 strips the cast down. No mansion, no army, no city to defend: Subaru, Emilia, Beatrice (his contracted spirit since the end of Season 2), Ram, Julius, Anastasia and the mabeast-handling girl Meili cross the dunes, bringing the sleeping Rem because nobody will leave her behind. The tower is less a dungeon than an exam hall. Its keeper, Shaula, greets Subaru with unsettling familiarity, and progress means clearing trials floor by floor under rules that punish anyone who breaks them.

Then the arc earns its name. Subaru wakes having lost every memory of his year in the other world while keeping everything from Earth, turning him back into the frightened teenager of the first episode, among people who love a version of him he cannot recall. Return by Death still works, so he has to survive without any of the lessons that made him useful, while puzzling over blackouts he cannot explain. The tower's library of Books of the Dead, which preserve the memories of people who have died, sits at the centre of that mystery.

Part 2, the Recapture Arc (episodes 78-85)

Early in the second cour Subaru finally admits his amnesia to the group, and the season accelerates. Shaula is revealed as the giant scorpion stalking the tower, the other Archbishops of Gluttony join the fight, and Reid Astrea, the first Sword Saint and Reinhard's ancestor, becomes the wall Julius has to climb. Episode 82 puts Subaru face to face with his former self and pays off the entire memory plot. Episode 83, "Good Loser", gives Julius his win over Reid while Emilia climbs to the top of the tower, and episode 84 is named after Ram, who settles the score with the Gluttony Archbishop who attacked her sister.

The extended finale brings Emilia face to face with the Divine Dragon Volcanica, who addresses her as Satella, the Witch of Envy, and its closing stretch delivers the moment the whole season was built around: Rem, asleep since episode 26, opens her eyes. The official epilogue visual shows her wide-eyed, Subaru reflected in her eyes, beneath the line "Rem, I missed you so much." Even Subaru's voice actor, Yusuke Kobayashi, admitted in his finale message that it may not be an ending fans can celebrate wholeheartedly, and novel readers know why: Rem comes back in body, not as the girl who remembers him.

Why readers waited so long for Arc 6

It is an arc about memory in a story whose hero is defined by remembering what everyone else forgets, so it turns Return by Death inside out without changing a rule. It also spreads the spotlight: Julius, the knight who humiliated Subaru in Season 1, gets his defining fight against the original Sword Saint, and Ram, the household's sharpest tongue, ends up fighting for a sister she cannot remember. Just do not expect closure. Shaula's ending lands closer to tragedy than triumph, and the questions around the Sage Flugel deepen rather than resolve.

Is there a Re:Zero Season 5?

Not officially, as of October 2026. No fifth season or other new TV project has been announced since the finale; the nearest thing to a hint came in the cast's farewell messages, with Rem's voice actor Inori Minase signing off with the hope of meeting viewers again someday. Treat any Season 5 date you see online as a guess. History does not help either: Season 2 came almost four years after Season 1 and Season 3 roughly three and a half years after Season 2, yet Season 4 was announced the night Season 3 ended and aired just over a year later.

Where the story goes next (light novel spoilers)

Season 4 stops where Arc 6 does, at the end of volume 25. Arc 7, The Land of Wolves, begins in volume 26 and leaves the Kingdom of Lugunica altogether: Subaru is thrown into the Vollachian Empire alongside Rem and Louis, the third Archbishop of Gluttony, both of whom have lost their memories. After three seasons spent trying to wake Rem, getting her back as a stranger is a very Re:Zero kind of victory. English readers can pick up at volume 26 of the Yen Press edition, which had reached volume 29 by the summer of 2026.

Catching up before (or after) Season 4

The full order is Season 1, the Memory Snow and The Frozen Bond OVAs, then Seasons 2, 3 and 4, roughly 37 hours in all, and our Re:Zero watch order explains why the Director's Cut is better saved for a rewatch.
