Dragon Ball Super

The Dragon Ball Super anime is Toei Animation's 131-episode sequel to Dragon Ball Z, aired on Fuji TV from July 2015 to March 2018 and set after Majin Buu's defeat. Goku and Vegeta first face Beerus, a cat-like god of destruction who wakes from a 39-year sleep to find the "Super Saiyan God" he dreamed of fighting. Akira Toriyama, who died in March 2024, wrote the story outlines, and Toyotarou has drawn the companion manga in V Jump since 2015.

Episodes 1-27 retell the films Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', and episode 5, Goku's first clash with Beerus, became infamous for unfinished animation (the worst shots were redrawn for home video). Quality recovers in the Universe 6 tournament, and the Future Trunks arc (episodes 47-76) gives Trunks a ruined future and Goku Black, a villain wearing Goku's face. The payoff is the Universe Survival arc (episodes 77-131), series-directed by Tatsuya Nagamine and Ryota Nakamura: ten fighters from each of eight universes share one stage, and losing universes are erased. When episode 130's Goku and Jiren fight aired in March 2018, Ciudad Juárez in Mexico and Machala in Ecuador each drew more than ten thousand people to unauthorised outdoor screenings, and it makes our list of the best anime fights of all time.

Two films continue the story: Broly (2018), directed by Nagamine, and the largely CG Super Hero (2022), which puts Gohan and Piccolo in front. Dragon Ball Daima (2024-2025) is a separate series set earlier. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus premiered on Fuji TV on 11 October 2026 as an enhanced remake, not a continuation: re-rendered footage, new and redrawn cuts and a story reworked closer to the manga. The true sequel, The Galactic Patrol, announced in January 2026 to adapt the manga's Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc, has no premiere date as of October 2026, and the manga has published no new chapter since February 2025. Our Dragon Ball watch order shows where each piece fits.

Super suits viewers who want Z's escalation with more comedy, since Beerus and his attendant Whis are as much a double act as a threat. If shaky early animation would put you off, watch Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', then start the series at episode 28. Our strongest Dragon Ball characters ranked follows the power scaling into the manga's later arcs.
