The 15 Best Anime Fights of All Time
Fifteen animated fights ranked on stakes, choreography and payoff, from Naruto vs Sasuke to Denji vs Reze, with the exact episodes to watch.
Ask ten anime fans for the greatest fight ever animated and you will get ten answers, most with a timestamp attached. We ranked fifteen that survive every rewatch. Every pick has actually been animated, and each comes with its arc and episodes, so you know exactly where to find it.
Quick answer The best anime fight of all time is Naruto vs Sasuke at the Valley of the End (Naruto Shippuden, episodes 476-478), because a rivalry built over nearly 700 episodes is settled in one last, exhausting battle. Netero vs Meruem (Hunter x Hunter) and Levi vs the Beast Titan (Attack on Titan) complete the top three.

How we ranked them
A fight climbs this list when three things land together: stakes the story spent real time building, choreography you can follow (you should always know who is winning and why), and animation that peaks exactly when the script does. That is why Levi's brief, brutal exchange sits above twenty-episode epics. We only counted fights that exist on screen, which rules out one very famous manga battle, covered below.
Spoiler warning: every entry discusses how its fight ends, including character deaths. The table above is safe; the rest is not.
1. Naruto vs Sasuke: the rivalry finally settles
The rematch works because the series had promised it since their first clash at the same valley in the original Naruto. Episodes 476-478 (autumn 2016) open at god-tier scale, with Naruto drawing on the tailed beasts' chakra against Sasuke's Perfect Susanoo and Indra's Arrow, then strip everything away until two exhausted teenagers throw a Rasengan and a Chidori, the moves they traded as genin. Both lose an arm. Pierrot's flashbacks can feel heavy-handed, but the logic holds: Naruto wins by refusing to give up on his friend. Watch the Fourth Great Ninja War first, or it is just pretty explosions.
2. Netero vs Meruem: a lifetime of prayer against a perfect king
Madhouse spreads this duel across episodes 122-126 (March-April 2014), cutting between it and the palace infiltration. Isaac Netero, the Hunter Association's elderly chairman, attacks with the 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, a colossal Nen statue whose palms strike faster than thought, while Meruem studies it and adapts. Half the tension is dialogue: the King only agrees to fight properly after Netero offers to tell him his own name, which he has never learned, while Netero realises decades of training still fall short. Episode 126 ends it with the Zero Hand and then the Poor Man's Rose, a miniature bomb set to detonate when Netero's heart stops: a fight about humanity, settled by its ugliest invention. Meruem also ranks among our greatest anime villains.
3. Levi vs the Beast Titan: speed paid for in blood
Context is everything. Across season 3's "Perfect Game" and "Hero" (episodes 53-54, May 2019), Erwin leads the recruits on a suicide charge into Zeke's rock barrage purely to buy Levi an opening. Wit Studio lets that horror sit, then snaps to Levi cutting through the Titans standing guard and dismantling the Beast Titan limb by limb before hauling Zeke out of its body. It is over almost as soon as it starts, and that brevity is the point: all that sacrifice, converted into seconds of perfect violence. The Cart Titan's last-second rescue keeps the feud alive into the final season.
4. Tanjiro and Giyu vs Akaza: ufotable's best work yet
The first Infinity Castle film (Japan July 2025, US September 2025) saves this for its final act, as the payoff for Rengoku's death in Mugen Train. Giyu awakens his slayer mark and still struggles to keep pace, until Tanjiro reaches the Transparent World and takes Akaza's head, and then the headless body keeps fighting. What lifts it above ufotable's other showpieces is the turn into Akaza's human past as Hakuji, and his choice to stop regenerating once he remembers who he loved. Our Infinity Castle guide covers what to watch first.
5. Luffy vs Katakuri: the fight where Luffy grows up
Most shonen fights end with a power-up; this one ends with Luffy learning a skill from the man beating him. Trapped in the Mirro-World from episode 851 (August 2018), he keeps losing to a Sweet Commander whose Observation Haki sees the future, retreating, recovering and returning until he glimpses it too. The best beat is Katakuri's: in episode 868 he stabs himself to match the wound his sister Flampe's interference cost Luffy, turning a villain into an honourable rival. Snakeman arrives in episode 870 and the fight ends in 871 (February 2019). Toei intercuts it with the Sanji and Pudding cake subplot, so the fight fills far less screen time than the episode range suggests.
6. Sukuna vs Mahoraga: a district erased
Episode 41, "Thunderclap, Part 2" (November 2023), is Jujutsu Kaisen at its most destructive. Dying, Megumi summons Mahoraga, an untamed shikigami that adapts to any attack and drags its summoner down with it. Sukuna, wearing Yuji's body with fifteen fingers restored, steps in to keep Megumi alive for his own reasons and answers the adaptation with Malevolent Shrine, a domain that shreds everything in range. Director Shota Goshozono's team animates it like a natural disaster. The sting comes after, when Yuji wakes up in the wreckage his body caused.
7. Saitama vs Boros: all that effort for one punch
The series' central joke is built into its best fight. Boros is having the battle of his life, regenerating, powering up and kicking Saitama onto the moon, while Saitama is mildly curious at best. Madhouse, with director Shingo Natsume and character designer Chikashi Kubota, animates episode 12, "The Strongest Hero" (December 2015), as if the outcome were in doubt, and the contrast is where the comedy lives. Boros's Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon meets a Serious Punch that clears the sky. Later seasons moved to J.C.Staff, so this is still the benchmark, and Saitama tops our strongest anime characters ranking.
8. Rock Lee vs Gaara: hard work against a monster
Never seen Naruto? Start here; it is the most self-contained fight on the list. In the Chunin Exam preliminaries (episodes 48-50, September 2003), Rock Lee, who cannot use ninjutsu at all, drops his training weights and becomes too fast for Gaara's automatic sand shield. He opens five of the Eight Gates to land the Hidden Lotus and still loses: the sand cushions Gaara's fall, and Sand Coffin crushes Lee's left arm and leg before Might Guy intervenes. Over twenty years on, Pierrot's hand-drawn taijutsu still looks superb.
9. Gojo vs Toji: the loss that made Gojo
This is really two fights. In episode 27 (July 2023), Toji ambushes a Gojo worn down by two days of constant Six Eyes use and, with a cursed tool that nullifies techniques, apparently kills him. In episode 28, Gojo returns having awakened Reverse Cursed Technique at the edge of death and uses Hollow Purple for the first time. Round one is a grounded, scrappy assassination; round two is a coronation, drawn in the looser, sketchier look that set the Hidden Inventory arc apart. Toji's parting words about his son, Megumi, reframe the whole series.
10. Mob vs Toichiro Suzuki: winning by not hating
Mob Psycho 100 II ends with its gentlest hero facing Claw's founder, a psychic who believes power is all that matters. Across the end of episode 12 and all of episode 13 (March-April 2019), Mob cycles through one "100%" emotional state after another, and director Yuzuru Tachikawa's Bones staff gives each its own texture. When Suzuki loses control of the power he spent years hoarding and starts to self-destruct, Mob does the least shonen thing possible and pulls the runaway energy into his own body to contain it. Suzuki is arrested in the aftermath, and his last act is to tell Sho he wants to see his mother again and apologise to her. The city also gets a colossal broccoli, grown from seeds in Mob's pocket.
11. Roy Mustang vs Envy: revenge, interrupted
Roy Mustang spends most of Brotherhood charming and strategic, so watching him go cold in episodes 53-54 (April 2010) is genuinely frightening. Envy brags about killing Maes Hughes, even wearing his widow's face, and Roy burns him again and again with calm, surgical flame alchemy. The climax is not a finishing blow: Riza Hawkeye, Edward and Scar talk him down, Hawkeye with her pistol raised, and Envy, humiliated by Edward's read on his jealousy, tears out his own philosopher's stone. Bones stages a fight where choosing not to kill is the win.
12. Ichigo vs Ulquiorra: the win nobody wanted
On the dome of Las Noches in episodes 270-272 (May 2010), Ulquiorra unveils a second release form and kills Ichigo outright. Orihime's scream brings him back as a Hollow that tears Ulquiorra apart and turns on Uryu too. Pierrot plays it as horror rather than triumph, and the ending is quietly devastating: Ulquiorra crumbles to ash while reaching for the heart he claimed not to believe in. The Arrancar saga around it is long, but this is the original Bleach at its most confident.
13. Jotaro vs DIO: two men who can stop time
Stand battles are won by bluffing and puzzle-solving, and Stardust Crusaders' finale (episodes 47-48, June 2015) is the format's best showcase. Once Kakyoin exposes The World's time stop, Jotaro discovers he can move inside it for an instant, and the finale becomes a contest of bluffs, from magazines stuffed under a coat to DIO draining Joseph's blood to stretch his stopped time. David Production embraces the absurdity, infamous road roller included, without losing the menace. Jotaro wins by matching DIO's own power, then uses the vampire's blood to revive his grandfather.
14. Denji vs Reze: a first date that turns into a war
MAPPA's Reze Arc film (Japan September 2025, US October 2025), directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, spends its opening stretch on a sweet summer romance, then detonates it. At the festival, Reze kisses Denji as the fireworks go off, bites out his tongue and reveals herself as the Bomb Devil hybrid, and the city becomes a battleground. It ranks because every explosion lands on a relationship we watched grow. Denji ends it by chaining himself to her and dragging them both to the seabed, where a bomb has nothing to burn, and the aftermath in the alley leading to their café, where Makima and Angel are waiting, hurts more than any punch. Our Chainsaw Man watch order shows where it fits.
15. Goku vs Jiren: when fans filled the streets
No fight here had a bigger real-world moment. Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power climax runs through episodes 129-131 (March 2018): Goku masters Ultra Instinct in 129, and episode 130 drew thousands of fans to public screenings across Latin America that Toei said it had not authorised. Toei's animation there is the arc's best, with Goku's evasive style finally looking effortless. It ranks last because the finish is shared, with Goku and Frieza (of all people) forcing Jiren out of the ring together, leaving Android 17 as the last fighter standing.
Honourable mentions
- Gon vs Pitou (Hunter x Hunter, episode 131, 2014): Gon trades his future for one moment of power, closer to an execution than a fight.
- Yuji and Todo vs Mahito (Jujutsu Kaisen, episodes 44-46, 2023): Todo's clap-swaps and Yuji's Black Flashes make it the series' best tag-team fight.
- Luffy vs Kaido (One Piece, episode 1071, 2023): Gear 5's rubbery, cartoon-style debut.
- Maki vs the Zen'in clan (Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, episode 4, January 2026): Maki's one-woman massacre is season 3's standout set piece.
What about Gojo vs Sukuna?
It is the fight most fans expect here, and we left it out on purpose: as of September 2026, it has not been animated. Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 aired twelve episodes from January to March 2026, covering the first half of the Culling Game. Season 4 (The Culling Game: Part 2) is in production at MAPPA, but neither its June 2026 teaser nor the Sukuna visual shown at Juju Fes in late August came with a release date. Even then, Gojo and Sukuna only meet in the Shinjuku Showdown, the manga's final arc, which follows the Culling Game. Our Jujutsu Kaisen watch order tracks what exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best anime fight of all time?
We rank Naruto vs Sasuke at the Valley of the End (Naruto Shippuden episodes 476-478, 2016) as the best anime fight of all time, because it resolves a rivalry that runs through the whole franchise. Netero vs Meruem (Hunter x Hunter) and Levi vs the Beast Titan (Attack on Titan) are the closest challengers.
Has Gojo vs Sukuna been animated yet?
No. As of September 2026, Gojo vs Sukuna has not been animated. Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 (January-March 2026) covered the first half of the Culling Game, and season 4 is in production with no release date announced. The fight belongs to the later Shinjuku Showdown arc.
What anime has the best fight animation?
Demon Slayer (ufotable), Jujutsu Kaisen (MAPPA), Mob Psycho 100 (Bones) and the first season of One-Punch Man (Madhouse) are the standard answers. The Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle film (2025) is the current high point for polish, while Mob Psycho 100 II is a favourite among animation fans for its hand-drawn effects.
What is the most emotional anime fight?
Naruto vs Sasuke's final battle and Tanjiro and Giyu vs Akaza in the Infinity Castle film are the most emotional, because both end with the opponent understood rather than simply beaten. Roy Mustang vs Envy (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, episodes 53-54) suits anyone who prefers a fight about restraint.
Which anime fight can I watch without seeing the rest of the series?
Saitama vs Boros (One-Punch Man season 1, episode 12) and Rock Lee vs Gaara (Naruto episodes 48-50) work best cold, since both need little backstory. Fights like Naruto vs Sasuke and Levi vs the Beast Titan lose much of their impact without the episodes that build up to them.
