Benimaru

from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SlimeFan favourite

Benimaru of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was the heir to the ogre clan and became the chief military commander of Rimuru Tempest's nation — a character whose entire arc is about what leadership looks like after it has been tested by genuine failure.

Background

He was the young chieftain-heir of an ogre settlement when Clayman's forces — acting through the Orc Disaster — destroyed it. He was there for the attack, was unable to prevent it, and watched his home and people fall before encountering Rimuru's group in the aftermath. The decision to join Rimuru was made after the kind of assessment that someone who has just failed at the one thing they were supposed to do makes carefully: he needed to determine whether Rimuru was worth following, not just whether following offered survival. His evolution from ogre to Kijin — a process enabled by Rimuru's nature and the concentration of power the True Dragon presence represented — amplified everything he already was without transforming his fundamental character. As Rimuru's chief military commander, he brings a combination of exceptional individual combat power and an understanding of what military organization actually requires. His flame-based techniques, combined with the physical capability of his Kijin form, make him one of the most dangerous fighters in the series' world. He is also, notably, someone who leads by being the first into the most difficult engagements rather than directing from a position of safety.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Flame TechniquesHis combat specialization in fire-based attacks, combined with his Kijin physical enhancement, produces an offensive capability that the series consistently treats as near the top of its power hierarchy; he can engage threats that would overwhelm most of the people he's commanding
Kijin Physical EnhancementThe transformation from ogre to Kijin dramatically amplified his baseline speed, strength, and durability; the enhancement is qualitative rather than just quantitative — he operates at a different level than he did before
Military LeadershipHis management of Tempest's military forces is more than nominal; he structures, trains, and deploys them with an understanding of what collective military action requires that goes beyond his individual combat capability

Personality

Direct and loyal without being deferential — he follows Rimuru because he has assessed Rimuru and determined that following is correct, not because following is easier than leading. He carries the failure of his home's destruction as motivation rather than guilt: the specific goal of becoming strong enough to protect what he has now is more useful to him than continuing to measure himself against what he couldn't do before. He respects competence and is not patient with its absence.

Relationships

  • Rimuru Tempest — the figure he follows by choice rather than circumstance; his loyalty to Rimuru is the result of assessment and is more stable for being so, because it doesn't depend on Rimuru remaining anything other than what Rimuru actually is
  • Shuna — his cousin, whose role in Tempest complements his own; the complementary nature of military leadership and the support systems she provides reflects a partnership that predates Rimuru's arrival in their lives

Role in the Story

Benimaru is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime's argument that the best military leaders are the ones who understand what they're protecting because they have already experienced what it means to fail to protect it — and that understanding produces something more durable than competence alone.
