Diablo

from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SlimeFan favourite

Diablo is one of the three Primordial Demons — a being of near-absolute destructive capacity who encountered Rimuru Tempest, found this more interesting than anything else in his long existence, and restructured the entirety of his considerable capabilities around serving someone who is, by any external measure, his categorical inferior.

Background

The Primordial Demons predate most of the organizations and power structures that define the world's current configuration. Diablo carried the designation of the black demon — associated in this world's cosmology with absolute evil — for long enough that meaningful challenge had become essentially theoretical. When Rimuru summoned him without fully anticipating what would arrive, Diablo's response to the slime who had somehow become one of the world's most consequential figures was immediate and complete. He became Rimuru's steward with the same totality he had previously applied to being a demon lord, and the gap between his actual capability and the average power level of the administrative problems he is now managing creates much of the comedy in his segments of the series. The devotion is genuine — it is not a performance of subservience but the specific enthusiasm of someone who finally found something interesting to dedicate himself to.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Primordial AuthorityAs a Primordial Demon, Diablo commands a tier of power that makes most named threats in the series look like a resource allocation problem rather than a genuine difficulty; his combat ceiling is among the highest of any character in the Tensura world
OverpowerThe capacity to impose his presence on others at a level that renders them functionally unable to oppose him; against anyone below the relevant power threshold, this resolves a conflict before it becomes a fight, which is efficient and reflects Diablo's general preference for not wasting effort
Magical VersatilityA range of elemental and esoteric abilities developed across millennia; Diablo can approach problems from multiple angles and rarely needs to default to raw force when finesse serves better — the millennia have produced someone with an extensively stocked toolkit
Administration and Political ManeuveringThe stewardship role requires capabilities that are not combat-based; Diablo proves effective at the organizational and political dimensions of Rimuru's expanding domain, which speaks to how his intelligence translates across domains that are superficially very different from destroying things

Personality

Formal with Rimuru in a way that never quite reads as servile — he is genuinely devoted but the power differential is also genuinely inverted, and the series never lets the reader forget it. He finds everything that falls below the level of Rimuru's attention mildly contemptible, and manages those things with efficient indifference. The comedy of his character comes from this: a being of immense age and destructive capacity, methodically processing administrative problems for a slime who is out doing something more interesting.

Relationships

  • Rimuru Tempest — the object of Diablo's complete loyalty; the nature of that loyalty is one of the series' more interesting character observations, because it is not simple devotion but rather the specific engagement of someone who finally found something worth being devoted to
  • Shion — a fellow secretary in Rimuru's inner circle whose competitive relationship with Diablo over Rimuru's attention is one of the series' recurring comic dynamics; the two are approximately equal in their regard for Rimuru and completely different in their methods

Role in the Story

Diablo is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime's demonstration that the most powerful entity in a room can also be the funniest presence in it, when the gap between that power and what it is currently being applied to is wide enough. His scenes are the series working out what absolute capability looks like when it is aimed at bureaucratic problems, and the result is consistently one of the better comic arrangements the series produces.
