Beta

from The Eminence in ShadowPopular character

Beta is the second of Shadow Garden's Seven Shades, a deadly operative who manages the organization's intelligence and public-facing operations — and who, separately, has written the most popular light novel series in the kingdom under a pen name she absolutely will not connect to her other identity.

Background

She is one of the original members of Shadow Garden, the organization built around Cid Kagenou's elaborate fantasy of being a shadowy mastermind fighting an ancient evil conspiracy. The original members joined because they were young women infected with a demonic curse who Cid — as Shadow — cured while presenting himself as an entity of extraordinary power operating behind the scenes of world events. His performance was so convincing that they built an actual secret organization around what they took as his genuine instructions, and the organization has grown to genuine operational scale precisely because they took it completely seriously. Beta is the most administratively capable of the Shades — she handles intelligence gathering, network management, and the coordination of Shadow Garden's public-facing activities, while also conducting her own field operations when the mission requires someone of her capability. In her spare time she writes. Her light novel series — a detective story built around a stylish antihero investigator — is a national phenomenon in the kingdom, and the disconnect between its author's public civilian identity and her actual occupation is a comedy the series enjoys without over-explaining.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Combat Capability (Seven Shades Level)As one of the original and most senior Shadow Garden operatives, her combat ability is far above standard — she is not among the most powerful of the Shades in raw strength terms but is fully capable of handling the threats Shadow Garden operates against
Intelligence & Information NetworksHer primary operational value is her management of Shadow Garden's information infrastructure — she builds and maintains the networks that make the organization aware of developments across the kingdom and beyond
Strategic AnalysisShe applies the same intelligence that makes her fiction compelling — narrative structure, character motivation, consequence tracing — to operational planning; her analysis of enemy intentions and likely actions is reliable

Personality

Composed and professional in operational contexts, with a specific warmth for her fellow Shades and a particular intensity around her Shadow-sama that she expresses with slightly less restraint than the formal structure of Shadow Garden suggests she should. Her novelist's instinct for human motivation and dramatic structure occasionally makes her analysis of situations more sophisticated than strictly necessary, which is a quality the series treats as both useful and gently absurd.

Relationships

  • Cid Kagenou (Shadow) — the person around whom she has organized a significant portion of her life and operational identity; her devotion is genuine and the series is careful about what it means when someone who understands people as well as she does chooses this
  • Alpha — the first Shade and the organization's operational head, with whom Beta coordinates the work that Shadow Garden actually does; their working relationship is professional and functional in ways that the series distinguishes from the more emotionally charged Shade dynamics

Role in the Story

Beta is The Eminence in Shadow's study in the person who is simultaneously completely serious about something and capable of doing something entirely separate with equivalent seriousness — who the absurd context of Shadow Garden hasn't prevented from building genuine skill, genuine relationships, and what turns out to be a genuinely successful creative career. The series uses her as evidence that the joke doesn't exhaust the character.
