Cid Kagenou

Cid Kagenou is the self-appointed mastermind who built an elaborate secret organisation based entirely on his own power fantasies — and discovered, to his ongoing delight and occasional inconvenience, that the fantasy was real the entire time.

Background

Reincarnated into a fantasy world after dying in his previous life while training obsessively in martial arts, Cid was born as the second son of a minor noble family with no particular claim to prominence. His goal from the beginning was never heroism or power in any conventional sense — he wanted to be the ultimate Eminence in Shadow, the figure who manipulates events from the background while everyone else plays the visible roles. He created a fictional secret society called the Shadow Garden and invented a fictional demon-worshipping cult to oppose them, then recruited a group of near-death elven girls as his subordinates, apparently as a fiction exercise. The problem — or the gift, depending on perspective — is that the cult he invented turns out to be real, his improvised backstory matches actual suppressed history, and his fabricated role as the all-knowing mastermind is accurate. He proceeds through the series operating on this premise while remaining almost completely unaware that his delusion is documentary.

Personality

Cid is not oblivious — he is selectively attentive, noticing everything that relates to his role-playing and nothing that does not. He is charming in the Shadow persona and unremarkable as Cid, which is exactly what he wants. His enthusiasm for the bit never wanes. He genuinely enjoys his life, which puts him in a different emotional register from almost every other power-fantasy protagonist.

Relationships

• Alpha — his most capable Shadow Garden agent and the one most aware of how little she actually understands about him; her growing suspicion that Shadow-sama may be operating on entirely different information is one of the series' running threads.
• Alexia Midgar — the princess whose schemes repeatedly drag Cid into events he finds either entertaining or convenient; their dynamic is the series' most consistently comedic relationship.

Role in the Story

Cid is the isekai genre's meta-joke told straight — a protagonist who mistakes himself for a bit player and accidentally builds the world's most effective intelligence network because his delusion happens to be true. His comedy and his genuine power co-exist without undermining each other, which is a harder balance to maintain than it looks.
