Brunhilde

from Record of RagnarokPopular character

Brunhilde is the eldest of the Valkyrie sisters and the one who stood before the Council of Valhalla to argue, against the assembled will of the gods, that humanity should be given the chance to fight for its own survival.

Background

The Council of Valhalla had gathered to vote on the fate of humanity — fourteen thousand years of observation had produced consensus for extermination. Brunhilde proposed an alternative: Ragnarök, a tournament of thirteen rounds pitting humanity's greatest champions against the gods, with humanity's survival as the prize. The gods accepted, largely out of amusement at the presumption. Her motivation is characterized as a Valkyrie's inherent love for humanity — the beings her kind are meant to serve — taken to its extreme logical conclusion: if humans deserve protection and the gods have decided to eliminate them, protection means fighting the gods. She selects and supports the human champions, manages the tournament's human side with strategic intensity, and maintains a ferocity of commitment that makes her indifference to personal risk consistent rather than reckless. Her relationship with her Valkyrie sisters is one of genuine love expressed through action rather than sentiment.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
VolundThe sacred technique allowing a Valkyrie to fuse with a human champion, transforming herself into a divine weapon in their hands — the ultimate act of Valkyrie service, which also places her life entirely in the hands of the person she chooses
Battle IntelligenceHer assessment of both human champions and divine opponents is one of her most critical functions; she selects, prepares, and matches with the thoroughness of someone treating the tournament as a problem to be solved rather than a ceremony to endure
Unwavering WillLess an ability than a fact — her resistance to pressure from gods who regard the proceedings as overstepping is what makes Ragnarök possible; without someone who cannot be moved, the tournament doesn't happen

Personality

Fierce and intentional, with the quality of someone who has decided what they believe and what they're willing to risk for it and is not available for negotiation on either point. Her love for her sisters is the emotional interior of a character whose exterior reads as strategic intensity. She is not wrong to be ferocious about what she's protecting — the series is clear that the stakes are exactly what she says they are.

Relationships

  • Goll — the youngest of her Valkyrie sisters, whose role in Ragnarök and relationship with Brunhilde carries its own emotional weight within the tournament's structure
  • Adam — one of humanity's champions whose fight demonstrates exactly the kind of human capability Brunhilde was arguing for when she proposed the tournament

Role in the Story

Brunhilde is Record of Ragnarök's argument that love for something eventually reaches a point where it demands action even against overwhelmingly greater power — and that the willingness to make that argument against everyone who disagrees is not stubbornness but devotion at its most clarified.
