Hajime Nagumo

Hajime Nagumo begins the series as the one student in his isekai-transported class who received the worst possible ability by that world's standards, falls further than anyone else in his cohort, and rebuilds himself into something his classmates do not recognize and cannot measure — which is, in the series' framing, precisely the point.

Background

When Hajime and his classmates were transported to a world where combat-class abilities confer supernatural power, he received Synergist — a crafting and enhancement skill with no direct combat applications in a hierarchy built entirely around combat. His classmates arrived with hero-class abilities and moved quickly into the system's prescribed roles; Hajime was left at the bottom. The fall into the dungeon's deepest levels was the event that forced the transformation: without safety nets or backup, with injuries that his classmates would not have survived, he adapted by consuming the monsters of the abyss. The dungeon's deep creatures carry biological modifications transferable through consumption, and Hajime's crafting ability applied to this material allowed him to systematically develop something that the hero-class students with their standard growth paths could not approach. The person who emerged from the abyss is not the person who fell in, and the series is honest about what that transformation cost.

Personality

The transformation from passive to ruthless was real, and the series does not ask the reader to pretend otherwise. Hajime post-abyss is not who his classmates remember, and his relationship with the world they inhabit is informed by a specific experience they did not share. What complicates this — and what the series invests in most carefully — is the relationships he builds with people who encounter him after the transformation, who know him as he actually is rather than expecting the version from before.

Relationships

• Yue — the vampire princess whose rescue from the abyss was the first real choice Hajime made for another person after his reconstruction; she encountered the post-transformation Hajime without prior context and formed her attachment to who he actually was, which gives their relationship a foundation the connections from before the fall do not have

Role in the Story

Hajime is Arifureta's central examination of what survival-at-any-cost produces in a person — what is preserved, what is discarded, and whether what remains is someone who can choose to let new things in. The series' answer is measured and specific rather than absolute, which is what keeps the question interesting across its runtime.
