Kaori Shirasaki

Kaori Shirasaki is the kind girl who loved the quiet boy who disappeared into the abyss — and who chooses to follow him into the most dangerous place in the world rather than accept that the person she knew is simply gone.

Background

Kaori was popular at school — genuinely kind rather than performing it, which made her status among classmates feel earned rather than manufactured. When her class was summoned to Tortus and assigned roles, she became a healer, one of the party's support pillars. Hajime Nagumo's fall into the Great Orcus Labyrinth's lower floors was ruled a presumed death, which the rest of the class accepted. Kaori did not. When Hajime returns — transformed into something colder, more ruthless, and barely recognizable as the person she had feelings for — she is the one who insists on seeing the original person inside the new exterior, and eventually stakes everything on that belief by leaving the relative safety of the party to travel with him.

Genuinely warm and less fragile than she appears. Her feelings are stated clearly and not retracted under pressure, which in a series full of characters who hedge constantly makes her one of the more honest people in the story.

Role in the Story

Kaori is Arifureta's argument that choosing someone changed by trauma requires seeing both versions of them clearly and choosing anyway. Her presence in the travelling party complicates the series' tonal register — she represents the world before the abyss, and her continued warmth towards Hajime is the reminder that who he was is not entirely separate from who he became.
