Itaru Hashida

Itaru "Daru" Hashida is the Future Gadget Lab's technological backbone, Okabe's oldest friend, and the person who actually builds the time machine that ruins everyone's year.

Background

He has known Rintarou Okabe since school and has been participating in the Future Gadget Lab's eccentric projects since the beginning — not because he believes in the mad scientist persona Okabe has constructed but because he genuinely enjoys the projects and genuinely values the friendship. He is a self-described super hacka (super hacker) with skills that are as real as Okabe's persona is theatrical: he can access virtually any digital system with the patience and technical knowledge he applies when he is motivated, which is more often than it appears because his primary visible activities are playing bishoujo games and making commentary that Kurisu finds offensive. He is overweight, wears his hair in a ponytail, and his public presentation suggests someone who is primarily a background element rather than a protagonist — a presentation that obscures how central he actually is. The Phone Microwave (Name Subject to Change) that the lab accidentally turns into a time machine is, practically speaking, his construction. He built the components, understood the electronics, and implemented the modifications that made it functional. That it turned out to be a time machine was not entirely in his plan, but the device working at all is his achievement.

His friendship with Okabe is not transactional or circumstantial; it's one of the series' constants.
