Mayuri Shiina

Mayuri Shiina is Rintarō Okabe's childhood friend in Steins;Gate — the person whose death becomes the unavoidable cost of every timeline the lab explores, and whose cheerful certainty that everything will be okay is either the series' deepest irony or its most genuine comfort, depending on the moment.

Background

Mayuri has known Okabe since childhood — she found him crying at his grandmother's grave and has been among his closest people ever since. She is a member of the Future Gadget Laboratory, officially designated Member 002. Her role in the lab is largely to make costumes, call Okabe by his self-assigned nickname Okarin, and be the warm social presence that keeps the group from becoming as hermetically strange as its founder. The series' central tragedy is structural: she becomes a fixed point in the timeline's feedback loop. In every world line the lab explores, Mayuri dies. The entire emotional architecture of Steins;Gate is built around Okabe's attempts to prevent this while finding a path that doesn't require sacrificing Kurisu to do it — a problem that has no clean solution.
