Kars

Kars is the leader of the Pillar Men, the ancient race at the heart of Battle Tendency, the 1930s arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Roughly a hundred thousand years old, he created the Stone Mask and hunts the Red Stone of Aja to erase his species' fatal weakness to sunlight.

Background

Kars was born into a small tribe of near immortal beings who fed on humans and lived in hiding, because direct sunlight burns their bodies away in seconds. Where the rest of his kind accepted that limit as permanent, Kars treated it as a problem to be solved. He designed the Stone Mask, a relic that drives spurs into the wearer's brain and forces a violent leap in vitality, and he kept refining it after the elders ordered him to stop. When they moved against him, he killed them and most of his own people, leaving a handful of survivors who followed him instead: Esidisi, Wamuu and Santana. The four later sealed themselves in stone to sleep through the centuries, which is how they come to be excavated and revived in the 1930s.

That last row is what keeps Battle Tendency tense. Kars is stronger, faster and older than everyone opposing him, so the fights are never won by power. They are won by landing a Hamon hit at the one moment he is not expecting it, which means traps, bluffs and terrain matter more than technique.

Personality

Kars is calm, articulate and almost polite, and that is exactly what makes him unsettling. He keeps flowers, and he will move a small animal out of danger, then wipe out a room of people a minute later without a shift in expression. Humans are livestock to him and his followers are instruments. Where Wamuu insists on honourable single combat, Kars is content to take hostages, strike from behind, or let a subordinate absorb the risk. He rarely boasts. He simply refuses to accept any limit placed on him and will destroy anything, including his own history, to get past it.

• Joseph Joestar: the Hamon fighter whose bluffing and improvisation keep derailing plans that should have worked perfectly.
• Esidisi: his oldest companion, the one ally who knew him before the tribe fell and the closest thing he has to an equal.
• Wamuu: a loyal lieutenant whose warrior's code Kars tolerates without ever sharing it.
• Lisa Lisa: a Hamon master he would rather use as leverage than face in a fair fight.

Role in the Story

Kars starts as the quiet figure standing behind the other Pillar Men and slowly becomes the arc's centre of gravity, escalating the threat every time Joseph thinks he has found the ceiling. He also links the two halves of the 2012 anime, since the mask that transformed Dio Brando in the Victorian era is his design, made tens of thousands of years earlier. Does Kars have a Stand?

No. Battle Tendency is set decades before Stands appear in the series, so no character in this arc has one. Kars fights with Light Mode, body manipulation and sheer physical superiority, while his opponents rely on Hamon.
