Maes Hughes

Maes Hughes is the State Military's most warmly human adult — Roy Mustang's closest friend, Edward and Alphonse's primary ally in Central City, and the character the original Fullmetal Alchemist uses to demonstrate, for the first time, that it intends to follow through on its consequences.

Background

Hughes and Mustang's friendship was formed during military service and has continued through their adult careers. Hughes works in the Investigations Division, where his combination of genuine warmth and real analytical competence positions him to notice things that should not be there. He is demonstratively devoted to his wife Gracia and daughter Elicia, showing photographs to essentially anyone he encounters at lengths that shade from charming to gently absurd. The series establishes this warmth as entirely genuine before using it structurally: Hughes uncovers information about the Ishvalan War and the homunculi's involvement that Dante's faction cannot allow to circulate, and his openness — the quality that makes him the story's warmest figure — is what places him in their path.
