Qifrey

Qifrey is the Witch Hat Atelier's master witch mentor — patient, technically accomplished, and carrying a private investigation whose connection to forbidden magic makes his position in the story considerably more complex than his students know.

Background

Qifrey leads a small atelier where he trains young apprentice witches, connecting him to the wider witch community and to the Sorcerers' Assembly that governs magical practice. His acceptance of Coco as a student is the series' inciting event — she witnessed a Brimhat spell and was transformed as a result, placing her in a position that would normally remove her from consideration as an apprentice. Qifrey's decision to take her on reveals something about his priorities. The series establishes gradually that Qifrey has his own history with the Brimhats — users of forbidden magic who operate outside the Assembly — and that his role as a mentor coexists with a personal investigation that predates it. His covered eye is not cosmetic.

His warmth and his secrecy coexist throughout, and the narrative uses this coexistence as one of its central tensions.
