Rudo

Rudo Higan is the protagonist of Gachiakuta — a young man thrown into the garbage of a society that discards its unwanted people, who discovers in that discard the power to fight back.

Background

He grew up in the slums at the margins of a floating city built on the assumption that some things — and some people — are simply waste. Regto, the junk collector who raised him, gave him the closest thing he had to stability. When Regto is murdered and Rudo is framed for the crime, the verdict is not prison but disposal: he is thrown into the Pit, the vast landfill below the city where everything unwanted goes. The Pit is not an absence but an ecosystem — violent, hierarchical, and populated by both survivors and the monstrous entities called Filth that make survival an ongoing problem rather than a baseline condition. In the Pit, Rudo awakens a Regalia: a power that manifests from discarded objects, giving form and function to the things that were thrown away. The metaphor is not subtle and the series doesn't try to make it subtle — what was discarded has value, and the person most qualified to demonstrate that is the one who was discarded alongside it. His goal is straightforward: find out who killed Regto, return to the surface, and make sure the truth is known. The simplicity of the goal is part of what makes him function as a protagonist in an environment that is otherwise almost entirely complicated.

Personality

He is driven by anger in ways the series is honest about — the anger at injustice, at loss, at being made into someone else's problem and disposed of accordingly. But the anger is not all he is. His loyalty to Regto's memory and his attachment to the people he meets in the Pit are genuine, and the series uses those attachments to keep his rage from becoming the only thing that defines him. He is loud, stubborn, and prone to decisions that work out because of his willingness to commit fully rather than because they were well-planned.

Relationships

• Riyou Reaper — the S-class Cleaner whose encounter with Rudo serves as a significant calibration point for what the Pit's power hierarchy looks like from above; the relationship between them develops beyond a simple assessment

Role in the Story

Rudo is Gachiakuta's central argument made human: that the things society throws away are not without value, and that the person best positioned to prove it is the one who was thrown away with them. His arc is about rage becoming purpose, and about learning to fight for something rather than simply against it.
