Tsukasa Shishiou

Tsukasa Shishiou is Dr. Stone's primary antagonist for its first arc — the strongest high schooler in the world before the petrification, whose ideology after revival is internally consistent, sincerely held, and genuinely dangerous.

Background

Before the worldwide petrification event, Tsukasa was known for a single distinction that the series earns rather than asserts: he was the best unarmed fighter his generation produced, in a world that had extensive documentation of what the best looked like. He was also, in ways the story reveals carefully, someone whose experience of that world was not the comfortable one the strong can sometimes have. He entered the stone age not as someone who lost something worth recovering but as someone who saw the event as an opportunity to build something different. His ideology is not random or nihilistic — it is directed. The civilization that existed before was inequitable, corrupted by inherited power and wealth, organized in ways that protected the people who benefited from it at the expense of people who didn't. The Stone World is a blank slate, and his plan is to keep it that way for the young by ensuring that the adults who perpetuated the old world's structures don't wake up to perpetuate them again. He kills petrified people. He does this with the specific certainty of someone who has thought the argument through and is willing to accept the costs. His encounters with Senku — whose science-based approach to civilization reconstruction is the series' direct counterargument to everything Tsukasa represents — are among the series' most interesting conversations, because he understands Senku accurately and Senku understands him the same way.

He simply believes he is right, and acts on that belief with the commitment of someone who has already decided what they're willing to pay for it.

• Senku Ishigami — the direct intellectual and ideological counterpart; their relationship is the series' central argument played out between two people who understand each other clearly and reach opposite conclusions from largely overlapping evidence

Role in the Story

Tsukasa is Dr. Stone's argument that the most dangerous opposition to something good is not stupid or malicious but genuinely thought through — that someone who has examined the old world honestly and concluded it shouldn't be rebuilt is making a real point, even if the response to that point is wrong. His arc is one of the series' most honest engagements with what idealism costs when it's actually implemented.
