Veldora Tempest

from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SlimeFan favourite

Veldora Tempest is one of the four True Dragons and Rimuru Tempest's sworn brother — a being of almost incomprehensible power who spent three centuries imprisoned and emerged considerably stranger and more interesting than he went in.

Background

Before the imprisonment, Veldora operated as True Dragons do: according to his nature, without much reference to anything beyond it. The rampage that resulted in his sealing — confined inside an inescapable prison of light by the hero Shizue Izawa's mentor — was not calculated cruelty but the outcome of an enormous force with no particular reason to moderate itself. He spent roughly three hundred years inside the seal, which is not nothing even for something as long-lived as a True Dragon. When Satoru Mikami — reincarnated into that world and not yet named Rimuru — encounters the cave and the enormous presence inside it, what follows is one of the series' most important conversations: two entities with nothing obvious in common finding each other interesting. They form a bond of sworn brotherhood, exchange names (a significant act in a world where names carry real power), and Rimuru takes Veldora inside his own ability — Unlimited Imprisonment — to work on breaking the seal from within, sharing light novels and manga from his memories to pass the time. When Veldora finally re-emerges, he's genuinely different: still vast, still powerful, but fond of fictional narratives in ways that his prior existence would not have predicted, and capable of forming and valuing connections in ways that a being of pure power and instinct typically isn't.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
True Dragon FormHis fundamental nature — one of four that anchor the world's magical balance; the power output associated with his true form is in a category that makes most conflicts in the series irrelevant as long as he's present and engaged
Storm of CatastropheHis signature ability in combat, generating winds and destructive force on a scale that affects entire regions; the designation "Storm Dragon" is descriptive rather than decorative
Unlimited Imprisonment (within Rimuru)During the period of his sealing within Rimuru, the two developed a shared access to each other's analytical capabilities, accelerating the work of understanding and breaking the original seal

Personality

Childlike in the specific way of something that has always been capable enough to not need to develop patience or tact — those qualities were never load-bearing before. What the imprisonment and the exposure to Rimuru's accumulated human experience produced is something with genuine curiosity about things it previously had no framework to care about, particularly stories. He's earnest about his enthusiasm in a way that is disarming rather than irritating, and the series uses the gap between his power and his enthusiasms as a consistent source of warmth.

Relationships

  • Rimuru Tempest — the sworn brother whose name he shares; the relationship is the series' most significant bond at the cosmological level and also one of its warmest, because Rimuru takes it seriously and Veldora, who has never had something to take seriously before, responds accordingly

Role in the Story

Veldora is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime's argument about what power is for — specifically, that enormous capability pointed at nothing in particular eventually encounters something worth orienting toward, and that the encounter is good for both parties. His arc is genuinely one of the series' most interesting, precisely because it costs him nothing obvious and gives him everything he didn't know to want.
