Wiz

Wiz is a former Demon General who now runs a magic item shop in Axel — one of the most powerful undead mages in the Demon King's army turned one of the worst businesspeople in the city's history.

Background

She was Demon General Wiz before she left the Demon King's army — a Lich, which is a form of powerful undead mage, and one whose magical capacity was formidable enough that her position was earned rather than granted. She left because she didn't want to keep fighting, a decision that has the simplicity of genuine preference: she was tired of it, and no one's philosophy about what war is for was compelling enough to make her continue. She established her shop in Axel, which serves adventurers and wanderers, and the shop operates in permanent financial emergency because she cannot bring herself to turn away sellers of worthless items. She buys them — out of sympathy, out of the understanding that the person trying to sell has something invested in the item even if the item is worth nothing — and the inventory accumulates while the shop's margins collapse. Aqua's presence in her life is an ongoing source of very specific discomfort: Aqua is a deity, and divine power affects undead directly, which means their interactions reliably cause Wiz physical pain. She manages this without resentment, which is more than Aqua deserves given how Aqua behaves.

The series is interested in the specific situation of someone who chose peace when they could have chosen domination, and who lives with the consequences of that choice including the ones that are absurd.

Wiz is KonoSuba's argument that the gap between capability and behavior is not a contradiction but a choice — and that someone who was genuinely formidable choosing to run a doomed magic shop out of sympathy for people trying to sell bad inventory is expressing something the series finds worth appreciating, even as it mines that choice for every comic possibility available.
