Chainsaw Man: Every Major Devil and Their Powers, Explained
A clear guide to how Devils work in Chainsaw Man and the powers of the major ones — from the Chainsaw Devil and Control Devil to the Blood and Ghost Devils.
Devils are the engine of Chainsaw Man's world. Here is how they actually work, and a rundown of the major Devils and the powers they bring.
Quick answer A Devil's strength scales with how much humanity fears the concept it embodies. The Control, Chainsaw and Blood Devils are among the most dangerous in the series.
How do Devils work?
Every Devil is born from a specific human fear — the more people fear a concept, the stronger its Devil. When a Devil dies on Earth it returns to Hell, and vice versa, so they are effectively reincarnating threats. Humans can form contracts with Devils, trading something of value (blood, time, body parts) for a slice of their power. Fiends are Devils that have taken over a human corpse, while Hybrids can transform between human and Devil forms.
The major Devils
Chainsaw Devil
The power behind Denji, fused with his Devil-dog Pochita. Pulling his cord turns his limbs and head into roaring chainsaws, with near-relentless regeneration as long as he has blood.
Control Devil
Embodied by Makima, this Devil represents the fear of control and domination. It can bend others to its will and is one of the most dangerous forces in the series.
Blood Devil
Power is a Blood Fiend who can shape and weaponise blood — hardening it into blades and hammers, and healing by consuming it.
Curse Devil
Aki Hayakawa contracts the Curse Devil, summoning a spectral nail-weapon that deals enormous damage at a steep personal cost — it shortens his lifespan with every use.
Future and Ghost Devils
Aki also contracts the Future Devil, glimpsing moments ahead in battle. Other early threats include the Ghost Devil and the maze-like Eternity Devil, each tied to a primal human fear.
Why the fear mechanic matters
Because power scales with fear, the most terrifying concepts — death, war, control, guns — produce the deadliest Devils. It is also why public perception can quietly shift the balance of power across the whole story.
Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the strongest Devil in Chainsaw Man?
The Control Devil and the Devils tied to humanity's deepest fears — such as death and war — rank among the strongest, making Makima one of the series' biggest threats.
