The Nine Titans Explained: Every Titan Power
What are the Nine Titans, and what can each one do? A clear breakdown of every Titan power in Attack on Titan, from the Founding to the War Hammer.
The Nine Titans are the heart of Attack on Titan's power system. Here is what each one is and exactly what it can do. Some spoilers follow.
Quick answer There are nine inheritable Titan powers — the Founding, Attack, Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart and War Hammer Titans — each with a unique ability, passed down when its holder dies.
The Nine Titans at a glance
| Titan | Signature power |
|---|---|
| Founding Titan | Command over all Titans and Subjects of Ymir |
| Attack Titan | Drive for freedom; glimpses of past and future memories |
| Colossal Titan | Enormous size and devastating steam explosions |
| Armored Titan | Hardened plating for offence and defence |
| Female Titan | Versatility, hardening, and calling other Titans |
| Beast Titan | Beast-like form and incredible throwing accuracy |
| Jaw Titan | Speed, agility and powerful crushing jaws and claws |
| Cart Titan | Endurance and the ability to carry equipment |
| War Hammer Titan | Creates weapons and structures from hardened flesh |
How the Titan powers work
Each of the Nine Titans is passed down the moment its current holder dies — either inherited deliberately or seized by being eaten. A holder has roughly thirteen years before the power claims their life, a rule known as the Curse of Ymir. All nine ultimately trace back to the source of all Titan power.
Why the Founding Titan matters most
The Founding Titan sits above the rest: it can control other Titans and even rewrite the memories and bodies of an entire people. Whoever holds it effectively holds the fate of the world — which is why so much of the story revolves around it.
