Himeno
from Chainsaw ManFan favourite
Himeno is a Public Safety devil hunter who has watched every partner she ever worked with die, and who greets that fact with a particular combination of gallows humour and genuine warmth.
Background
Himeno joined Public Safety's devil hunter division and formed a series of partnerships, each of which ended in her partner's death. By the time the series begins she has been partnered with Aki Hayakawa for several years — long enough that she genuinely cares about him and is aware of his contract with the Curse Devil making his death likely. Her contract with the Ghost Devil, which cost her right eye, is one of the more powerful civilian contracts in the division. She is killed during the Katana Man arc, using her Ghost Devil to its limit to protect her colleagues.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ghost Devil Contract | Grants control over invisible ghost limbs capable of gripping, striking, and restraining; the cost was her right eye, which she covers with an eyepatch |
| Combat Experience | Years of fieldwork against devils has made her tactically adaptable and difficult to surprise |
| Full Control (last resort) | At the cost of her entire body, she can give the Ghost Devil complete freedom — a move she uses once, during the ambush that kills her |
Personality
Warm, self-aware, and slightly reckless with her own life. Himeno drinks too much, flirts too readily, and deflects serious conversations with jokes — all behaviours that trace back to a career defined by loss. She is not performatively sad about any of it; she has simply decided to enjoy the time she has, which makes her both good company and quietly heartbreaking to watch.
Relationships
- Aki Hayakawa — her partner and the person she is most invested in protecting; her efforts to dissuade him from his revenge-driven contract form the emotional core of her arc
- Denji — the chaotic new recruit she meets on his first day; her drunken kiss with him at the welcome party is one of the series' most memorable scenes
- Power — a devil-fiend colleague whose total disregard for social norms Himeno finds exhausting and occasionally useful
Role in the Story
Himeno is Chainsaw Man's study in institutional sacrifice — she is good at a job that consumes everyone who does it well, and she knows this. Her death shifts the series' tone considerably, demonstrating that the threat facing Public Safety is not manageable by the tactics that have worked until that point.
