Jonathan Joestar is the honourable English gentleman at the heart of Phantom Blood, the opening arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Heir to a wealthy Victorian estate, he learns the sunlight-powered martial art of Hamon to stop his adoptive brother Dio Brando and the horrors a stone mask unleashes.

Background

Jonathan is born in 1868 to the Joestar family and raised on a country estate in England with every advantage except company his own age. His mother dies in a carriage accident while he is an infant, leaving his father George to raise him alone. The household changes overnight when George takes in the son of a man he believes saved his life. Dio arrives intending to own the Joestar name, and spends years quietly dismantling Jonathan's friendships and confidence. By the time Jonathan is a broad, rugby-built archaeology student, a stone artefact in the family collection turns that private feud into something far worse.

Baron William Anthonio Zeppeli teaches him, and the crash course lasts weeks rather than the years such training normally takes. Jonathan is never the most elegant Ripple user: his breathing is raw, his stamina drains fast, and he wins by absorbing punishment and closing distance rather than by finesse.

Personality

Jonathan is stubbornly decent in a way that costs him. He apologises when he is wrong, keeps promises made to people who cannot enforce them, and offers his hand to opponents who have earned no such courtesy. He is not gentle, though. He fights bloody, loses his temper when someone he cares about is hurt, and charges at danger with more courage than planning. His curiosity is genuine too: he picks archaeology, reads obsessively, and works out what the mask does because he keeps asking questions nobody else bothers with.
