Robert E. O. Speedwagon

Robert E. O. Speedwagon is a supporting character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, introduced as a knife-carrying gang leader from London's Ogre Street slums who becomes Jonathan Joestar's most loyal ally. He has no Hamon training, yet his instincts, nerve and later fortune make him one of the franchise's most important non-fighters.

Background

Speedwagon grows up in Ogre Street, the roughest quarter of Victorian London, where he heads a crew of muggers and settles arguments with a blade. He enters the story on the wrong side of it: he and his men jump Jonathan Joestar when the young heir comes looking for the man who sold poison to his adoptive brother. Jonathan beats them, then refuses to look down on them, arguing that poverty made the street what it is. That single act of decency flips Speedwagon permanently, and he attaches himself to the Joestar cause for the rest of his life.

Speedwagon never learns the Ripple, and the series is honest about it: he is a normal man standing beside people who breathe sunlight into their fists. Loud, tearful and completely without vanity. Speedwagon announces his admiration at full volume, narrates other people's courage as it happens, and openly rates himself below the fighters he follows. He is also unusually clear-eyed about his own limits, which is why he steps back from battles he cannot help in rather than dying for a gesture. Underneath the theatrics sits the discipline of a man who survived a slum: he plans, he counts the odds, and he does not romanticise violence.
