Obanai Iguro

Obanai Iguro carries one of the Demon Slayer Corps' most specific histories — a childhood spent as a sacrifice-cult prisoner — and his severity, which reads as cold to most colleagues, is the form that particular damage takes when someone has decided that survival requires becoming impenetrable.

Background

Iguro was born into a family that functioned as a cult devoted to a powerful snake demon who periodically claimed members as sacrifices. He survived the household but a cousin who sheltered him was taken in his place, and he could do nothing to prevent it. He escaped and eventually reached the Demon Slayer Corps, where his motivation — atoning for his survival by eliminating the source of such suffering — is more austere than most of his colleagues'. His partial blindness is connected to this background: he can only see clearly through his white snake companion Kaburamaru, who relays visual information and accompanies him in combat.

Personality

Severe, demanding, and closed to almost everyone. He holds other corps members to strict standards and expresses approval rarely. The exception is entirely visible in any interaction involving Mitsuri Kanroji — a completely different register becomes briefly present. His internal monologue, when the series provides it, is among the more self-abnegating in the cast.

Relationships

• Mitsuri Kanroji — the one person around whom his emotional interior becomes fully visible; his feelings for her are direct and are addressed in the series' final act
• Tanjirou Kamado — a demon slayer whose different approach to the corps Iguro assesses critically before their eventual coordination in the Infinity Castle sequence

Role in the Story

Iguro is the series' portrait of what specific damage looks like when it has been converted into structure rather than dissolved — a person whose capacity for care has been so compressed by experience that it has only one visible exit. His arc in the final act is the most emotionally complete of any Hashira in the supporting cast.
