Panda
from JUJUTSU KAISENFan favourite
Panda is a grade 2 jujutsu sorcerer who happens to not be a panda — or a human — or really any one thing at all, which turns out to be the source of his most formidable ability and the core of what makes him one of Jujutsu Tech's most unusual fighters.
Background
Panda is a mutated cursed corpse created by Principal Yaga — not a transfigured animal but an entirely original being constructed from cursed energy and given consciousness, personality, and three internal cores. He enrolled at Tokyo Jujutsu High as a student, not because he was placed there, but because Yaga raised him and the school was home. His existence raises questions the series takes seriously: what is a "real" sorcerer, what is consciousness, and whether something constructed rather than born deserves the same consideration as something that arrived naturally. The manga eventually answers these questions in brutal fashion — but until that point, Panda lives an almost cheerfully normal sorcerer's life alongside his classmates.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Three Cores | Panda's body houses three distinct cursed energy cores — his primary "Panda" core plus an older brother "Gorilla" core and a secret third; switching cores completely changes his combat capabilities |
| Gorilla Mode | Activating his older brother core transforms Panda's fighting style and increases his raw striking power dramatically; the Gorilla persona is more aggressive and single-minded than Panda's normal demeanor |
| Cursed Energy Reinforcement | As a cursed corpse, Panda can channel cursed energy through his body without the internal bleeding risk that affects human sorcerers — he doesn't tire the same way, though he can be damaged |
| Unconventional Durability | His body is not biological and doesn't respond to attacks the way a human's does; some techniques that rely on disrupting biological function have reduced effect on him |
Personality
Panda is sociable, perceptive, and genuinely warm in a way that some of his classmates aren't. He's the kind of person who notices when someone is struggling and says something about it directly without making it uncomfortable. He doesn't perform anxiety about his own nature and doesn't require others to validate his existence — he knows what he is and seems broadly at peace with it. His humor is dry and self-aware, and he is one of the few characters who can talk to almost anyone in the cast without friction.
Relationships
- Toge Inumaki — his closest classmate, someone he can communicate with nonverbally across the limitations of Inumaki's speech-curse; they operate together with a quiet ease
- Megumi Fushiguro — a first-year Panda observes with something like cautious respect; Megumi's self-imposed isolation is legible to Panda in a way it isn't always to others
- Nobara Kugisaki — the first-year he's most likely to tease gently; they bicker in a way that reads as mutual affection
Role in the Story
Panda represents Jujutsu Kaisen's genuine philosophical interest in what makes consciousness real and whether something's origin determines its worth. He exists as a kind of baseline humanity in a cast often defined by extremity — neither the most powerful nor the most damaged, but the most consistently himself. When the series eventually forces a reckoning with what he is, the cost of that reckoning lands precisely because he was so thoroughly a person before it happened.
