Chousou

from JUJUTSU KAISENFan favourite

Chōsō is the eldest of the nine Death Painting Wombs in Jujutsu Kaisen — a cursed hybrid who begins as an antagonist fuelled by grief for his brothers and ends as one of Yuji Itadori's most committed protectors, connected to him by a blood bond that cannot be easily dismissed as manipulation.

Background

Created from a union of human and cursed spirit, Chōsō and his brothers Eso and Kechizu were sealed as Special Grade cursed objects before being revived by the Kamo clan. His motivation is straightforward: he exists to protect his brothers. When Yuji defeats Eso and Kechizu in battle, Chōsō's grief brings him into direct conflict with the protagonist — but the series complicates this by establishing that Chōsō and Yuji share a blood connection through Kenjaku's experiments, a fact Chōsō perceives through a false memory he experiences as undeniable truth. He cannot discard it, and he does not. His protectiveness extends genuinely to Yuji, and he acts on it.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Piercing Blood (Ja Ri)Compresses his blood into a supersonically fast projectile; among the most dangerous ranged attacks in the series
Convergence + SupernovaConcentrates blood to near-maximum density then detonates it; effective even against opponents with high physical defence
Blood ManipulationFull control over his own blood as both precise and wide-area weapon
DecayCan accelerate decomposition through contact with his blood

Personality

Composed and deliberate almost to a fault; he processes the world through the lens of family loyalty and acts with the single-minded precision of someone who has never had a goal beyond protecting the people he considers his own. His emotional range is narrow but his grief is real, and the series does not treat it as less valid for belonging to a cursed spirit.

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — considers him a brother by Kenjaku's design; fights alongside him in later arcs with the same ferocity he brought to opposing him
  • Sukuna — aware of Sukuna's presence within Yuji and the threat this represents; navigates it with controlled wariness

Role in the Story

Chōsō represents what Jujutsu Kaisen does with villains whose motivations are not malevolent — he is consistent, principled by his own logic, and his alliance with Yuji lands because the series earned it rather than manufactured it.
