Kasumi Miwa

Kasumi Miwa is a semi-grade 3 jujutsu sorcerer at Kyoto Jujutsu High — genuinely skilled by most human standards, firmly in the middle tier of the series' combat hierarchy — and the character through whom JJK establishes what the ordinary-talented end of sorcery actually looks like.

Background

Miwa comes from a non-sorcerer family of modest means and chose jujutsu sorcery partly because her aptitude qualified her and partly because the path offers income stability she could not otherwise access. This makes her unusually explicit about the economic dimension of sorcery work — for most characters, fighting cursed spirits is a calling or an inherited obligation; for Miwa, it is also employment. She becomes one of the more consistently visible members of the Kyoto contingent and is openly admiring of Gojo Satoru in a way the series plays for comedy while also using to characterize her as someone who responds to excellence directly rather than competitively.

Her open admiration for Gojo is both comedy and characterization — she responds to excellence without filtering it through competition, which places her in a genuinely different register from most sorcerers. Her practical concern for her family's financial situation is the series' most explicit acknowledgment that jujutsu sorcery is also labor.

Miwa is JJK's calibration character — through her the reader understands what a trained, capable, non-elite sorcerer actually looks like, which makes the upper tiers of the power system legible by contrast. Her humanity and economic transparency make her one of the series' most grounded figures.
