Zeus

Zeus is the Supreme God of the Greek Pantheon, the chairman of the gods' council, and the being known throughout Record of Ragnarok as the "God Father of Cosmos" — an ancient, overwhelmingly powerful deity who is also, unexpectedly, the most eccentric person in any room he enters.

Background

He chairs the divine council that votes every millennium on whether to continue humanity's existence, and it was his gathering that Brunhilde interrupted with the proposal of Ragnarok. In council, he is calm, authoritative, and carries the formal weight appropriate to the oldest and most powerful of the gods — the other deities defer to him visibly, and his demeanor suggests someone who has presided over enough history to be unhurried about almost anything. The eccentricity surfaces in practice: he is prone to exaggerated emotional outbursts, and at the start of round two — the match he himself would compete in — he broke into a spontaneous dance in front of the entire assembled divine and human audience, which Hermes immediately labeled the most shameful display any god had produced. He fought Adam, humanity's first man and the first human to possess the divine gift of reason and will, in the second round of Ragnarok. The fight required him to take the contest more seriously than any previous engagement in his existence had demanded, and the series uses this as the moment when Zeus — ancient, certain of his own supremacy — encounters something genuinely unexpected.

The formal authority and the eccentricity are both genuine — he is not performing dignity in council and then letting a hidden personality emerge in private. He is the same person in both contexts, and both his composure and his willingness to dance in front of everyone are expressions of someone who is genuinely old enough to be past caring how others interpret his behavior. His later acknowledgment of humanity's strength, after watching several rounds of Ragnarok, is presented as a real concession from someone whose initial certainty about the outcome was not pretense.

Zeus is Record of Ragnarok's most complex divine figure — not because he is morally ambiguous in the simple sense, but because his arc requires him to genuinely update a certainty he has held longer than most beings have existed. The series uses his fight with Adam as its statement about what human will looks like to someone who created the world, and what it means when that person is surprised.
