One Piece: Haki Explained

In One Piece, the gap between a strong pirate and a genuinely frightening one is almost never the Devil Fruit. It is Haki: willpower turned into a weapon, which everyone carries and almost nobody wakes up. Here are the three types, the advanced forms that separate the New World's monsters from everyone else, and who handles each best.

What Haki actually is

Silvers Rayleigh gives the founding lecture in chapter 597, adapted as anime episode 516, at the start of Luffy's two-year training, and he teaches it by running a wild elephant through all three types: dodging it with Observation, turning it back with Armament, then dropping it with Conqueror's. His framing is simple: the power is latent in everybody, and most people die without ever finding it. There is no rule set to memorise and no contract to sign, which is what separates it from Nen in Hunter x Hunter. It is intent given physical weight, which is why characters carrying an obsession tend to have terrifying Haki.

Before Haki was systematised, Logia users were untouchable and every fight against one was a puzzle. Armament settles that: from the New World onwards a Devil Fruit is an advantage rather than an answer, because everyone dangerous can hit you whatever your body is made of.

Observation Haki: the radar

At base level, Observation is awareness you have no right to: count the people behind a wall, feel their emotional state, read an attack a fraction of a second before the arm moves. Enel ran a superb version in Skypiea under the local name Mantra, hundreds of chapters before the word Haki appeared: he eavesdropped on an entire island and slipped attacks he had no line of sight on.

Two awakenings show how it grows. Koby unlocked his at Marineford, where the volume of dying voices overwhelmed him rather than helping, and by the time skip he could pick out a torpedo running underwater at a nearby ship while Helmeppo, who has Observation of his own, missed it entirely. Usopp awakened his late in Dressrosa, feeling Law, Sugar and Luffy from most of a country away. That shot breaks the toy curse, and it is where he stops being comic relief with a slingshot.

Future Sight, the advanced form

Charlotte Katakuri introduced the ceiling of Observation in Whole Cake Island: not prediction but a genuine glimpse several seconds ahead. He keeps it switched on almost constantly, and the rule he states is the key to the whole fight: you cannot read the future unless you are calm. Luffy matched it inside the Mirror World only after being comprehensively beaten several times over, which is the point: nobody is handed Future Sight.

Armament Haki: the one you cannot skip

Armament is invisible armour layered over the body. Push more into it and the limb or blade turns black, the hardening most fans picture. Poured into steel over years it changes the steel itself, which is how a Black Blade is made, why Zoro treats Enma as a long project rather than a weapon choice, and why Mihawk's Yoru, one of the twelve Supreme Grade blades, is already black. Every serious New World fighter has it.

Ryuo, emission and internal destruction

Wano has its own word for advanced Armament: Ryuo, a flowing form the country's samurai have practised for generations without ever calling it Haki. Hyogoro, a broken old yakuza boss in Udon prison, teaches it to Luffy in the middle of Queen's Sumo Inferno death match. Luffy struggles because his instinct is to compress Haki into his fist, and Ryuo asks for the opposite: let it flow past the surface and detonate inside the target.

That distinction is why Wano works as an arc: Kaido's hide makes external damage close to pointless, so the only route to hurting him runs through the inside. Emission is the same principle aimed outwards, Haki pushed off the body so a strike lands without contact, which is exactly what Hyogoro's open palm does when it stops short of Alpacaman's throat and caves it in anyway.

Conqueror's Haki: the one you are born with

Haoshoku is the type you cannot earn. Rayleigh's figure is one in several million, which English editions often round down to one in a million, and the series keeps repeating that carrying it marks someone out as having the qualities of a king. That is why it shows up in captains, admirals and emperors rather than in their crews. Training never creates it, only sharpens the control.

The baseline effect is pressure: release it and anyone whose will cannot hold up loses consciousness. Shanks used it in chapter 1 to drive off the Sea King that had just taken his arm, almost 600 chapters before the story had a word for what readers had just seen. Luffy did it twice by accident first, flattening Duval's giant pet Motobaro with a glare at Sabaody, then dropping a wave of Marines at Marineford while the veterans worked out what they had watched.

The confirmed roster reads like a who's who: Roger, Whitebeard, Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom, Rayleigh, Boa Hancock, Don Chinjao, Doflamingo, Eustass Kid, Yamato, Zoro, Luffy, and at least four of the Five Elders, who spent Egghead proving the World Government's leadership is not ceremonial.

Advanced Conqueror's, or why Onigashima moved the ceiling

Spoiler warning: this section covers the end of Wano.

Kaido demonstrates the advanced form on the Onigashima rooftop and explains it in the same breath: a handful of people alive can coat their body or weapon in Conqueror's Haki, and the strike then lands without contact. It reads as black lightning crawling over the limb. Luffy fumbles into it around chapter 1010 and spends the rest of the fight learning to aim it.

Zoro gets there in chapter 1033 against King, by a route worth spelling out. Enma keeps draining more Haki than he wants to give, and the only way to make the blade obey is to pour will into it, the exact thing he did not know he could do. Big Mom, Yamato, Roger, Whitebeard and Shanks belong to the same club. As of September 2026 the manga has complicated Zoro's membership: in chapter 1193 he aims the infusion at a Holy Knight, gets ordinary Armament instead and admits he is still practising, so the Wano version reads as instinct rather than control.

Each step costs an arc rather than an episode. The One Piece watch order keeps them straight if you are catching up.

Who is best at what

Katakuri remains the Observation benchmark: keeping Future Sight running is a different discipline from switching it on when frightened. Among the Straw Hats we would take Sanji as the sharpest baseline reader: his style depends on reading a room at speed, without Future Sight to bail him out.

Spoiler warning: manga-only Elbaf material ahead. As of September 2026 the manga has put Scopper Gaban forward as an Observation user on another scale entirely: on Elbaf he counts Holy Knights who are deliberately suppressing their presence while nobody around him registers a thing.

For Armament, Rayleigh is the technician's pick: at Sabaody he got a Haki-coated sword past Kizaru's guard and marked an admiral's face, which a Logia body is not supposed to allow. For Conqueror's, Shanks, who has ended more conflicts by arriving than by fighting. Four things fans get wrong

• Conqueror's cannot be trained into existence. You refine what you were born with, which is why no mentor ever offers to teach it.
• Baseline Conqueror's does not damage bodies. It knocks out the weak-willed and nothing more; only the infused form does harm.
• A black arm is not advanced Haki. Black is hardening, ordinary Armament pushed hard. Ryuo passes through the surface, and advanced Conqueror's shows as black lightning.
• Haki does not replace a Devil Fruit. The terrifying fighters have both, and Haki is what stops a fruit being a hard counter.

Where the story stands as of September 2026

The anime closed Egghead with episode 1155 on 28 December 2025, returned on 5 April 2026 with Elbaf, and now runs at roughly 26 episodes a year instead of weekly. Episode 1180 airs on 27 September 2026 and ends this run, with the next batch expected in 2027. Every Haki milestone above is animated already, up to and including the Five Elders unloading Conqueror's Haki at Egghead. The manga is further into Elbaf, with chapter 1194 due on 27 September 2026, and that is where the newest Haki material sits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many types of Haki are there in One Piece?

Three: Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku), Armament Haki (Busoshoku) and Conqueror's Haki (Haoshoku). Anyone can develop the first two with training, while Conqueror's is innate and only about one person in several million has it. Each has an advanced form: Future Sight, Ryuo and Conqueror's infusion.

What episode does Luffy learn Haki?

Which Straw Hats have Conqueror's Haki?

Two: Luffy, who had it before he knew the word, and Zoro, who awakened it during Wano while fighting King and forcing the sword Enma to cooperate. The rest of the crew use Observation and Armament Haki to varying degrees, but neither of those types is rare.

Does Haki work on Devil Fruit users?

Yes, and that is the point of Armament Haki. Logia users can normally turn their bodies into an element and let attacks pass through, but Armament bypasses that and lands real damage. It is why post-time-skip fights against elemental users stop being puzzles and become brawls.
