Lucifer

from The Devil is a Part-Timer!Popular character

Urushihara Hanzo was Lucifer, a fallen angel general of considerable power — and has adapted to modern Tokyo by becoming a hikikomori, discovering the internet, and deciding this was probably the best possible outcome.

Background

In Ente Isla he served as one of the Demon Lord Satan's four great generals, a fallen angel whose combat power and role in the conquest of the human world were significant. After being wounded in battle against Emilia the Hero, he ended up in modern Tokyo alongside the Great Demon General Alciel. Where Maou adapted to human society by becoming a model fast-food employee and where Alciel applied military precision to household management, Lucifer discovered online shopping, gaming, and the internet as a general proposition — and stopped doing anything else. He occupies their apartment in a state of near-permanent inactivity that is the opposite of his previous existence as an agent of conquest, which he has apparently found more comfortable. His intelligence is genuine and occasionally useful: when he is motivated by something that genuinely interests him — usually something involving digital systems or acquiring things without paying for them — his ability to gather information, access networks, and apply analytical intelligence to problems is considerable. He has a habit of spending whatever demonic power they collectively possess on unnecessary online purchases, which is a consistent source of conflict with Alciel and a consistent source of comedy for the series.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Demonic Power (Weakened)In Tokyo, without the faith and negative emotion that fuel demonic power in Ente Isla, he operates at a fraction of his battlefield capacity; the power that remains is directed primarily at things he wants rather than military objectives
Information Gathering & Digital AptitudeHe has adapted his intelligence-gathering instincts to modern technology with suspicious effectiveness — he can access, compile, and analyze digital information at a level that exceeds what his apparent commitment to leisure would suggest
Fallen Angel Combat (Ente Isla)His full capability in the world where demonic power functions properly includes flight, destructive divine-adjacent power, and the command authority of a Great Demon General; in Tokyo, this is mostly theoretical

Personality

Caustic, self-interested, and genuinely committed to doing as little as possible unless something specific engages his curiosity or threatens his comfortable situation. He is smarter than he presents and more attached to the household he has been adopted into than his surface behavior indicates. He has the specific kind of loyalty that expresses itself entirely in crisis rather than daily life, and occasionally says things more cutting than he intends.

Relationships

  • Sadao Maou (Satan) — his former commanding lord, whose authority he acknowledges and whose household he has effectively joined; his relationship with Maou is complicated by the fact that he is not as subordinate as the formal structure suggests and not as independent as he pretends
  • Alciel — the fellow general with whom he shares the apartment and a consistent dynamic of Alciel managing things and Urushihara spending the money that management conserves; the friction is real and so is the underlying understanding

Role in the Story

Urushihara is The Devil is a Part-Timer's study in what adaptation can look like when someone has genuinely found their preferred environment — he is not trying to return to Ente Isla, not working toward any strategic goal, and not performing contentment; he simply found the internet and decided this was better. His utility to the series is providing a character whose cynicism and observed intelligence occasionally cuts through situations others are taking too seriously.
