Emilia Justina is the Hero of Ente Isla who chased the Demon Lord to Earth to finish him — and found him working the fry station at a fast-food chain, paying rent on time, and apparently enjoying both.

Background

She comes from Ente Isla — a world where the Demon Lord's armies conquered vast territories and caused enormous suffering before she, as the Saint Hero Emilia, fought back alongside other heroes and forced Satan to retreat through a dimensional gate to an unknown world. She followed him through. What she arrived to on Earth was Tokyo, which provides no magical power to either of them and where Satan has reinvented himself as Sadao Maou, convenience store and fast-food employee with ambitions of becoming a full-time manager at MgRonald's. She gives herself the identity of Emi Yusa, works at a call center, and lives near him because she cannot allow him out of her sight — officially because he remains a threat to be eliminated, practically because the evidence that he is being a threat is accumulating slower than the evidence that he is being a remarkably conscientious shift worker. Her background is also complicated in ways the series reveals gradually: her heritage, the true nature of her powers, and her connection to the religious structure of Ente Isla all turn out to be more complicated than the straightforward hero-versus-demon-lord framing suggests.

Personality

Principled and intense, with a specific relationship to the cognitive dissonance of watching the person she came to destroy be kind to elderly customers and cover shifts for sick coworkers. She is not going to admit that this creates a problem. She is also not going to stop noticing it. The series plays this tension for comedy and occasionally for something more uncomfortable, and Emi's capacity to maintain her stated position while behaving in ways that complicate it is one of its consistent pleasures.

• Sadao Maou — the Demon Lord who is supposedly the object of her mission and is actually the center of gravity for her Tokyo existence; their dynamic is the series' engine, and the slow, grudging shift in what they actually are to each other is handled with more care than the comedic framing might suggest
• Chiho Sasaki — Maou's coworker, whose feelings for Maou create a complicated dynamic with Emi that the series uses to add dimension to both characters
• Alciel — Maou's loyal general, whose domestic management of their shared apartment and theatrical devotion to the Demon Lord's restaurant career provides consistent context for why nothing about this situation is what anyone planned

Role in the Story

Emilia is The Devil is a Part-Timer's challenge to its protagonist's premise — she is the evidence that everything the demon lord represents actually cost real people real things, and the series does not let the comedy erase that even as it asks her to live next to the person who caused it and observe him being, objectively, fine.
