Satan Jacob

from The Devil is a Part-Timer!Popular character

Satan Jacob, Demon King of Ente Isla, fled through a dimensional gate to escape defeat and emerged in modern Sasazuka, Tokyo — where he discovered that world domination requires funds, that funds require employment, and that employment, for now, means the night shift at MgRonald's.

Background

Satan commanded the demon armies that nearly conquered Ente Isla in a campaign defined by strategic genius and overwhelming power. The arrival of the Hero Emilia forced a retreat through a dimensional gate that stripped both of them of nearly all their magic — leaving the Demon King and his general Alciel stranded in a world with no ley lines to restore their power. Satan adapted by getting a job. Under the name Sadao Maou, he works at a fast food restaurant with enough ambition and work ethic to have already received an employee-of-the-month recommendation. The comedy of the series is that the attributes that made him a terrifying conqueror — relentless drive, ability to learn quickly, loyalty to subordinates — translate into exactly the kind of employee his franchise wishes it could clone.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Demonic PowerAt full strength in Ente Isla, Satan commanded enough magical force to field continent-scale armies and personally devastate regions; in Tokyo, his power is reduced to near-nothing and recovers primarily from ambient negative emotion
Dark Power ManifestationSufficient accumulation of human suffering and fear temporarily restores his demonic form; he has used this in Tokyo under circumstances where the city's distress was high enough to matter
Strategic GeniusThe ability that doesn't require magic and that functions perfectly in a modern economic context; Satan is extremely good at understanding systems and optimizing his position within them
Rapid LearningHe mastered Japanese, modern technology, and consumer service culture in weeks; the same cognitive capacity that made him a conqueror makes him a fast study in any new environment

Personality

Ambitious, loyal to his subordinates to a degree that often surprises people who expect a demon king to be exploitative, and genuinely engaged with his current situation rather than simply tolerating it. Satan doesn't hate working — he hates powerlessness, and since he can't fix the powerlessness right now, he applies his considerable drive to what he can control. He is also, in the most comedic moments, completely sincere about caring whether MgRonald's gets a good inspection review.

Relationships

  • Alciel (Shirou Ashiya) — his most loyal general and current domestic manager; Ashiya handles housekeeping and strategy for their eventual return while Satan earns their rent, a dynamic that functions as the series' central odd-couple relationship
  • Emilia Justina — the Hero who followed them to Tokyo and remains determined to kill Satan while being continually derailed by the fact that he keeps doing things that make him harder to hate

Role in the Story

Satan is The Devil is a Part-Timer's core comic premise made into a character study: what does it tell you about power when the person who has none of it still acts the same way? His arc examines whether identity is defined by circumstance or by consistent character, and it argues, with considerable warmth, that it might be the latter.
